Riyadh, Kingdom Saudi Arabia

Master planning of several new communities in the outskirts of Saudi Arabia’s capital city of Riyadh. Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) – the largest and most profitable non-oil company in the Middle East and one of the world’s largest petrochemicals manufacturers – is planning these communities to include 1,400 homes for the company’s workers as well as shops, restaurants, schools, mosques, health clinics, parks and recreation facilities. Great cities are often perceived as a singular phenomenon yet they result from a set of controls written and unwritten. Codes ensure a clear direction of aesthetics in pursuit of harmony. The project establishes planning by-laws through which SABIC ensures its status as a premiere residential district, clear in arrangement, elegant in articulation and sound in sustainability. Planning principles set the highest possible standard to ensure consistency in approach and design processes. These principles serve as the foundation for the final urban code and design guidelines that direct all future development at SABIC.
